Described in the 1876 edition of ‘The Herefordshire Pomona’ and rediscovered by Bulmer’s who used it in their cider

Drops late September to mid-October

Sweet and astringent with white flesh sometimes reddening below the skin

Ellis Bitter Size:M25 A very old eating appleAn early bittersweet cider apple. Yellow green smooth waxy skin, heavily flecked with flush and slight russet. Flesh sweet and astringent, white, crisp and juicy. Flowers mid May. Harvest late September. Mature trees tend to be large and spreading. Slow to crop but then reliable, heavy fruit. A Devon variety also planted in the Long Ashton orchards in the 1930s. Triploid.
