Certainly if you get to lay him and calm the board with just a +2 then you are going to win if they don't have spot removal for him
For example, if a player sacrifices a 3/3 creature to cast Fling, and you copy it, the copy of Fling will also deal 3 damage to its target
The sacrifice ability occasionally came in handy, guarding against mass removal even though it was never the primary motivating factor, and it was hard for decks running him to justify keeping the necessary mana untapped until very late in the game
There are a few removals like Shriekmaw or Karn Liberated, but for the most part they are shut down quite ably

Hitting every opponent at once makes it easy to grind down the entire Commander pod over a few turns of creature sacrifice, and can even be used in combination with cards like Gravecrawler and Phyrexian Altar for an instant combo win
